The Benelux Association for Artificial Intelligence is the academic organization for all AI research in the Benelux. The BNVKI consists of approximately 150 members covering over 20 universities. It has a long tradition starting in the 1980’s and is a member organization of the European Association for AI (EurAI – eurai.org). BNVKI aims to stimulate research on, and the application and education of I, as well as the dissemination of knowledge about AI.
Réseau IA is exclusively composed of members representing companies, organizations and initiatives related to Artificial Intelligence. Our objective is to accelerate the economic development of companies and various organizations in Wallonia through Artificial Intelligence. SustAIn.Brussels serves as a single point of access to sustainable and digital innovation in Brussels with a focus on AI and other emerging technologies. We are a European Digital Innovation Hub in Brussels set up with the support of the European Commission, Innoviris and hub.brussels. Coordination is done by Sirris, Agoria, BeCentral, VUB and ULB.
FARI is an independent, not-for-profit Artificial Intelligence initiative led by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
TRAIL aims at creating a structure allowing to mobilize the research and innovation capacities of the Walloon and Brussels regions for their socio-economic development in the field of Artificial Intelligence in coherence with the regional policies conducted in this field. To this end, TRAIL interacts with the socio-economic fabric to transmit and enrich, through new challenges, the expertise and tools developed in the field of Artificial Intelligence by Universities and approved Research Centres, within the framework of publicly or privately funded projects.

Leuven.AI – KU Leuven Institute for Artificial Intelligence Leuven.AI is one of the first four “KU Leuven Institutes” bringing together KU Leuven’s world-class AI experts from diverse disciplines in an interdisciplinary research network with societal relevance. The articulation of Leuven.AI as an institute is important to all interested in AI at the KU Leuven, as it will result in many new activities and even more interdisciplinary AI research.
The Flanders AI Research Program stands for strategic basic research into artificial intelligence, based on the needs and demands of companies, organizations, the government, and citizens. Our goal is the successful adoption of AI in Flanders. In this way, we contribute to a sustainable and prosperous human-centered digital future in Flanders, as well to economic growth and innovation in our region. All our research is also aligned with the European ambition and strategies for AI and the digital agenda for 2030.
The SPW Economie, Emploi, Recherche (SPW EER) implements the Walloon government’s policy in the fields of economy, employment and research. It represents Wallonia at various levels of government, and acts as a relay for European programs.
It serves as a conduit for European programs and is a vital force in addressing economic shifts. SPW Research facilitates applied research and innovation, supporting entities from businesses to research organizations. It aids companies in participating in various programs and promotes science and technology awareness. With about sixty staff, SPW Research funds AI projects and contributes to the DigitalWallonia4.IA Steering Committee, collaborating on the Intelligent Specialization Strategy and European initiatives within SPW-EER.
icity.brussels is a joint initiative of ULB, VUB and SIRRIS and a technology hub. Funded by the ERDF and Innoviris, icity.brussels is entirely devoted to strengthening Research and Innovation in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Brussels. It has already launched R&D ICT projects in several key domains like education, e-Health, mobility, Internet of Things or 5G.
UGENT.AI Ghent University has a strong tradition in artificial intelligence and data science related research. Many research teams are working on foundational aspects of AI and are applying the latest AI techniques in a wide range of application areas. In total this accounts for about 50 professors, 50 post docs and 200 PhD students and it results in collaboration with over 300 local and international companies.
VAIA At VAIA, the Flanders AI Academy, professionals and researchers can learn about artificial intelligence. We collect and organise training courses to help you learn about or apply the possibilities of AI. VAIA is a collaboration between all the universities and universities of applied sciences and arts in Flanders.
AI4growth is the community of AI stakeholders in Flanders. Its members consist of suppliers of AI technology, businesses on the lookout for AI applications and corporate and academic experts and talent.
CLAIRE seeks to strengthen European excellence in AI research and innovation. Its extensive network forms a pan-European Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe. CLAIRE was launched in 2018 as a bottom-up initiative by the European AI community and aims for “brand recognition” similar to CERN.
The AI Experience Centre of the VUB is dedicated to emerging as an enabler by connecting academic expertise of the EU AI Framework with relevant stakeholders. We strive to support an effective European AI Innovation Ecosystem by facilitating the cross-fertilization and exchange between stakeholders and to create new AI-powered value chains that can positively improve business and society and deliver benefits to citizens. A productive European AI Innovation Ecosystem is an indispensable element in overcoming key adoption challenges.
